“I Know I Should Breathe… But It Doesn’t Help”

If you’ve ever been told to “just breathe” when you’re overwhelmed, anxious, or lying awake at night (and felt quietly irritated by it) you’re not alone - This used to be me too!

Most women already know breathing is meant to help. The problem is, no one ever explains how, or why it sometimes doesn’t work at all. That’s where this conversation begins.

We’re Breathing, Just Not in a Way That Helps

Liz and I talk about something that surprises a lot of women: many of us are breathing in ways that actually keep the body in stress mode, without realising it.

Busy minds. Shallow breaths. Holding the breath while reading emails, driving, or thinking through a to-do list. It becomes so normal that we stop noticing it, until exhaustion, anxiety, or burnout creep in.

This episode isn’t about doing breathwork perfectly. It’s about understanding what your body has been doing all along.

When Stress Lives in the Small Moments

One of the things I loved about this conversation is how practical it feels. Not “go lie down for 20 minutes and meditate”, but noticing the everyday moments that quietly push the nervous system into fight-or-flight.

Opening your inbox. Waking at 3am with your mind racing. Trying to make decisions when you’re already depleted.

We talk about how small shifts in breathing can change how those moments feel, without adding yet another thing to your to-do list.

Gentle Tools, Not Another Thing to Get Right

This episode isn’t a how-to guide you’ll feel pressured to memorise.

It’s a reassurance that regulation doesn’t have to be complicated or time-consuming, and that when breathwork is done in a trauma-informed, compassionate way, it can become a quiet form of support rather than another demand.

We also talk about why who you learn breathwork from matters, especially if you’re already overwhelmed or sensitive to stress.

This Isn’t About Fixing Yourself

Like so many of the conversations on this podcast, this one isn’t about becoming calmer, better, or more productive. It’s about understanding what your nervous system has been responding to, and offering it something gentler.

If stress has been sitting in your body for a long time, this episode will feel like permission to stop forcing calm… and start supporting it.
